In the dusty ruins of once verdant Earth, humanity is forced to live in bio-domes that protect them from the harsh environment of the Burn Zone. In the government controlled domes, life is highly regimented and Dax, a high school history teacher, is tired of his lackluster existence, but he has plans to make everything better.
Unfortunately for Dax, an orphan named Jake has different ideas. The boy wants Dax to abandon his dream of a cushy new professorship and go looking for what must surely be a fable. The government says that the only thing outside the comfort of the domes is death, but the two will have to cross the void in an attempt to fulfill the boy’s self-proclaimed quest.
Can Dax forego his plans, defy his government and survive the Burn Zone, just on the whim of a kid? And if he does, can he protect Jake and himself from the unknown dangers of the outside world?

This book is the first of two books. The second book is available. This book ends in a light cliffhanger; it can be read as a stand alone if the last chapter or so is ignored. There are no overt sexual situations or language; rape is mentioned but not graphically described. Language is clean except for a couple of uses of swear words. This book is suggested for late teens.Dax is a history teacher in a society where references to history are gradually being erased or rewritten. He lives in a Biodome; one of the concentrations of remaining humanity. Several generations ago a two part ecological disaster caused the ice caps to melt, causing immense flooding. After the floods came devastating heat, drying up most of the ground water, changing fertile land into vast deserts, and making travel outside dangerous from UV radiation.
Dax is depressed. More restrictions seem to come from the directors of the dome: bandwidth for the internet, fresh food is not available, water is restricted.
Checking final exams he finds one from his best student discussing what happened to farming. That sets off a chain reaction eventually winding up with Dax, his student Jake, and Jake's friend Blossom escaping from the Biodome and setting off across the desert, looking for a fabled green area.
It can be forgiven for the character of Dax to be ignorant of how to survive outside the Biodome, but eventually this becomes annoying. While conflict between adults and young teens is expected, the three rarely share information; cryptic comments, sullen answers, and intellectual one upmanship detracts from the story. It is to be hoped even teenagers would have enough of a sense of self preservation to recognize the need for cooperation.
The story gains more depth when a rabbit-shaped artificial intelligence is found and brought along. Its mandate to protect the group bringing to light the dangers of traveling across the desert.
The bad guys, Sand Walkers--what's left of groups of survivalists--are poorly delineated. They have the potential to be much more dangerous than .portrayed.
The story in general is lightweight. Hunted by drones from two different groups, they stumble across what they need to survive just as it's needed. After a while the coincidences become almost predictable and the characters are in no real danger.
This book is a little rough but a solid plot. It needs a proofreader. There are some misspellings, but misuse of words commonly seen in young writers are irritating to this reader: amount instead of number; less instead of fewer; riffle instead of rifle, dessert instead of desert.
With better proofreading and fleshing out the characters this book has the potential to become a good, solid read.

Last Farmer Last Farmer Series Book 1 edition by D N Robertson Danica Robertson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Engaging, fast-paced story; interesting characters; unique vision of the future; suspenseful, gripping events. This book is entertaining from start to finish. Bring on the sequel.
Love this Book, it has a great story line and left me wanting more. I can't wait for the sequel.
This was a great story with a great twist on future events. Well written, very imaginative - great read overall. I will be looking out for the next one!
Great yarn. Very possible outcome for humanity, based on present world unrest. Highly recommended reading.
Great story that moves well. Hard to put down. Ending was a little rushed. Cant wait to read next book.
This was a great story. It has plenty of action, intrigue, and excitement. The characters are well developed and fun to get to know. And, I just found out that there is a sequel. Can't wait to get it!
Really liked this book. There were too many coincedences, though. The brother and sister. The niece. The parents. I loved how they had to find clues in the file. The island is great. Seemed like it would be a happily ever after. The ending was a little confusing. Until he remembered. Look forward to the next one.
